10 Preparation Tips for TOEFL Reading Test

You understand your national English speaking friends when they speak. They can even understand. However, this does not mean that you are ready to test TOEFL. We've said it before and it is value repeating that the TOEFL exam is all about plan. You will also need one to help you prepare successfully for the test. Need help with TOEFL?

TOEFL IBT has 3-5 texts. Most of them are around 700 words long. They are followed by 12-15 questions based on the text. There is 20 minutes allocated to each section of text / questions.


Here are ten tips to help you practice for the TOEFL test reading.

1. Read

This may sound obvious, but the best way to practice for the TOEFL test reading is to read as much as possible prior to the widest possible range of subjects as possible. Current affairs, health, sports, anything. Also, to all media in your reading materials such as books, electronic texts, and magazines. Meet and size of texts that are 700 words in length.

2. Keep Vocabulary Notebook

How to keep in mind what you need to do every day? Do you write lists on paper? Are you in the online agenda? Stick a yellow post -it on the fridge? It does not matter. Do the same with a new vocabulary. Building a vocabulary bank and refer to it as often as you can to refresh it in your memory. This will help you develop a strong vocabulary that should be of great help to you when you sit TOEFL test reading.

Highlighting of important data such as vocabulary, dates and places can help you to relax and order your thoughts. Go ahead and do it while you read, if that helps.

8. Learn to guess unknown words

When you are facing a new word, what do you do? Panic? Consult a dictionary? None of these answers will help you in the exam. Learn to guess the meaning of new words from the context of a passage or words and paragraphs that surround it.

9. Learn to choose pronouns

When you speak, you know that there is a big difference between the pronouns he, she and IT. It is the same when read. Learn to pay attention to the pronouns in the text, so know who or what it refers to, particularly if there are several characters in the text. This could be the difference between you answering a question correctly and incorrectly.

10. Relax

To really capture the meaning of a text must be reduced so that you can focus on it completely. If you are very nervous you might miss important and perhaps obvious points.
