TOEFL Do’s and Don’ts

1. You can ask for the tape volume to be adjusted at the opening of the administration of the test, but remember that it is unlikely that all test takers will be pleased.

2. Listen carefully to the instructions. The tape will explain how to complete the list of personal data and how to mark your answer sheet. It is important to follow these instructions.

3. If you need to delete, do it gently with a clean eraser.

4. Work quickly with the easy part. Be sure to skip a space on the answer sheet when you skip a difficult position. After answering easy positions, return to those who fail.

5. A light mark on your answer sheet of each item you want to check again to be carefully removed before the end of the test.

6. If you complete one of the sections previously returned only in this section to double check your answers. Do not work on any other section of the test. This is not allowed. If you are caught working on the wrong section, a test will be canceled.

7. Be ready for changes. From time to time there is a change TOEFL test format or more elements in order to respond to the longer period of time.

8. Answer all questions; however, do not waste time in difficult positions. If you think either answer is correct, pick one and go. If you do not know, then you have to guess. You are not penalized for guessing and your guess may be correct.

9. If you see that the time is almost over and can not read and respond to all other items, select A, B, C, D or your offer letter and quickly respond to objects that letter. You are more likely to get some correct answers if you use one letter than if you use them.
